The alarm woke Kip and he quickly reached over and shut it off. He went to the bathroom and headed to the kitchen to start the coffee. When it was ready, he went out onto the back porch and sat down to plan his day. He needed to go to the post office, the grocery store, the library, and the hardware store. When he finished his coffee, he went inside to shower and get his day started. As he was getting ready to leave the house, he powered up his cell and saw that he had two missed calls and one voice mail. He listened to the message and smiled as he recognized the voice. It was from Pete Wilson, a guy that Kip had met a couple of weeks before. Kip knew he was going to have to put the guy out of his misery sooner or later, but didn't want to hurt the guys feelings. Kip gathered the rest of his things and headed out, lost in thought.
Across town, Pete sat at his desk in the back of his hardware store going through some receipts. No matter how he tried, he could not seem to concentrate. It was all Kip Jenkins' fault. The guy was driving Pete crazy, plain and simple! Sure, they'd only had coffee once, and Kip had come into the hardware store a couple of times, but for Pete, that was all it took. He'd asked for Kip's number and had even called three or four times, but Kip had yet to respond with anything more than a polite voicemail. Pete decided not to push too hard lest he scare Kip away, but it was very hard not to. Besides, Pete felt that he would be a damned fool if he let Kip get away. He was brought out of his reverie by his counter guy, Jimmy, who told him that there was a man out front asking for him.
When he got up front, Pete was pleasantly surprised to find Kip standing there.....
“Hello there! This is a nice surprise.....”
“Hey, Pete..... How are you?”
“A lot better now! I take it you got my message?”
“I did..... I apologize for not getting in touch.....”
“Care to talk about that over coffee?”
“No time, I'm afraid. I've still got errands to run and things to get done.....”
“What about dinner? You gotta eat, don't you?”
“Sure..... dinner sounds okay. Where do you want to meet and what time?”
“How about the Holmes Cafe about seven o'clock?”
“Sounds good..... I'll see you then.....”
Pete felt the familiar stirring in his loins as he watched Kip walk toward the front door. He knew hard work and perseverance was in order if he was gonna get some of that. He turned and headed to his office to try and get some work done.
Later that evening, Pete sat in a booth at the Holmes Cafe waiting for Kip to show up. He was hoping that he'd be able to make some progress toward getting the little guy in bed. Even though they'd only gone out for coffee and talked on the phone a few times, Pete was extremely attracted to Kip and hoped Kip felt the same. He planned to “test the waters” tonight and see what happened. When Kip arrived, Pete's heart skipped a beat, and he felt that familiar throb in his groin that he felt every time he saw Kip.
Dinner was great with good food and excellent conversation. The two men talked about anything and everything. When they were finished, Pete paid the check and suggested they stop at Rowdy's Bar for a nightcap. They'd had a few beers and danced a bit when Pete started to make his move. He was being subtle at first, hints dropped here and there, “accidental” touches, and so on. He was getting frustrated because Kip didn't seem to be getting the message. A bit later, Kip surprised Pete by saying they should go somewhere a bit quieter.
The two men ended up at Kip's place. Pete just knew that all his efforts were about to pay off when Kip completely destroyed his plans.....
“Pete, I think we need to talk....”
“What's on your mind, Kip?”
“It's more like what's on you mind.....”
“I don't follow.....”
“Sure you do! You've been hinting around about it most of the night.....”
Pete was suddenly embarassed because he'd been caught. And here he was thinking he was so smooth.....
“Kip, don't be mad.....”
“I'm not mad..... I just think we need to discuss things and clear the air.....”
“What do we need to talk about? It seems pretty simple to me.....”
“What's pretty simple?”
“The fact that I want you, and I want to be with you.....”
“Pete, I'm in no condition to try and love again.....”
“What do you mean?”
“The man I loved broke my heart badly and it needs time to mend.....”
“Who is he?”
“His name is Eric Bradley. I met him when I first went to New York, and we hit it off. We were together for almost twelve years.”
“He cheated on me with a guy he worked with.”
“Did he ever say why he did it?”
“I never really gave him a chance. I stayed long enough for the divorce to go through and then made arrangements to come back to Texas. I figured that if I put enough distance between us, I'd be able to get over him and get on with my life.”
“How long has it been?”
“Almost a year.....”
“So you started talking to me before you were over your ex?”
“It's not like that, Pete. You make it sound like I'm a slut or something.....”
“That what it sounds like to me.....”
“You're just pissed because I haven't fallen into bed with you. Don't looked so shocked, Pete..... I'm not stupid. I was just trying to explain why I haven't responded to your advances. If you can't understand that, then I guess I was wrong about you.....”
“No, Pete, I think it's time you went home. We both need some time to think things over.....”
Pete rose from the couch and headed for the door. Kip got his jacket and gave it to him. Pete could see he'd really upset Kip and was at a loss as to how to make things better. He bid Kip goodnight, walked to his truck and left. Kip went to his bedroom to get ready for bed. He knew it was only fair to Pete that he tell him the truth about why things hadn't gone any further than they had between the two of them. He hoped that Pete would understand his desire to take it slow. Even if he didn't, Kip hoped the two of them could at least be friends. As he drifted into sleep, he hoped that he hadn't made too big a mess of things.
Across town, Pete lay in the darkness thinking about the situation with Kip. He wanted the little guy so much, and now he didn't think it was going to happen at all. He really did understand what it was like to be hurt because he'd been hurt in the past, and also knew that it did take a while sometimes to get over. His thought was this: Why should he have to pay for something someone else had done? It just wasn't fair! He decided that he needed to make Kip see that they could be so good together, if Kip would just let it happen.....
To Be Continued.....
